Newsletter for 9/16

Ms. Bradley's Class
Weekly Newsletter

Hello first grade families! We had a great first full week together. We are getting more settled into our routines and diving deeper into the first grade curriculum. The children are really doing well! We also took our first round of MAP tests and will continue with those next week.
Math: We continued with Unit 1 this week. We are moving quickly through Unit 1 because most of it is a review. We have been reviewing our number partners along with even and odd. We will take our Unit 1 test on Friday and start Unit 2 on Monday. Math homework will also start next week.
Reading: We started our stations this week. The children rotate through snack, silent reading and working with me. We are working on building our stamina while silent reading. It is taking lots of practice but we are getting the hang of it!
Writing: We are continuing with our “Name of the Day”. We have also started to work on our handwriting. We will continue with “Name of the Day” for most of the month.
Science: We are continuing to learn about Monarch butterflies. The children

are very excited about the chrysalis that has formed! We are still watching our other caterpillars.
Housekeeping Items:
- Your child will take his/her MAP math tests next week Monday and Tuesday.  It is very important that your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before and eats a healthy breakfast that morning so they are ready for the test!
- Word Wall Words started this week. Please take time to help your child practice his/her words. If you do not have a good place for the words at home, they can stay in your child’s folder. Then just take them out each night to practice! It is very important that your child is able to read and write these words!
- The weather is changing quickly on us. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Layers tend to work best since it can still be quite chilly in the morning!
Important Dates:
- 9/19 & 9/20 MAP math test
- 9/20 Early Release dismissal at 12:30
- 9/29 Picture Retake Day
- 10/7 Homecoming Parade wear your black and orange!!
If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me! Have a great weekend!

Hey first grade families! We spent the week working on our school and classroom routines together. Our Safari day was awesome! The children enjoyed watching their teachers act the “wrong” way and getting the chance to model the “right” way. Definitely a fun day together!
Math: We started Unit 1 this week. We are working on breaking apart our numbers to find number partners and reviewing our shapes. We will continue with Unit 1 next week.
Reading: We read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? We also made a chart about what it means to be a Bucket Filler and what it means to be a Bucket Dipper. We also read a bus poem and looked for sight words.
Writing: Each day we have been adding to our “Name of the Day”. The children really enjoy writing about their friends!
Science: We read about Monarch butterflies this week and made a chart about what we already know about caterpillars and butterflies.
Housekeeping Items:
- If you haven’t yet, please send in 4-6 pictures that show things or people that are important to your child. We will be gluing these to writing folders so you will not get them back.
- Next week your child will take his/her first MAP test. This is a computer-based test so we can see how your child is learning and how much they know. We will take the MAP test 3 times this year. Each time we will take two reading tests and two math tests. It is very important that your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before and eats a healthy breakfast that morning so they are ready for the test!
***Please check your child’s communication log DAILY. Your child marks his/her behavior in the log each day. I ask that you please initial below where your child has marked each day. This helps show your child that we are all on the same page! Thank you!!

Hello first grade families! We had a great    time getting to know one another today and yesterday. We will continue to work on  learning our classroom routines. We enjoyed some “Jitter Juice” yesterday together to help  the butterflies in our stomachs go away!

Math: We did some reviewing of the math they worked on in kindergarten. The children are eager to dive into the first grade math curriculum. We did some graphing using with our Jitter Juice activity.

Reading: We reviewed our kindergarten sight words. I was impressed by how many words the children remembered. We also looked for sight words in our Jitter Juice poems.

Writing: We wrote about how we felt on our first day of first grade. We also wrote about one new friend we met.

Science: We took a peek at our caterpillars. We will be watching the process from caterpillar to butterfly over the next few weeks!
Housekeeping Items:

- I do not normally send a newsletter on short weeks, but thought it would be good for our first week.

- Thank you for taking the time to fill out the “Getting to Know Your Child” sheets. It definitely helps me know more about what will help your child succeed.
- If you haven’t already, please take some time to check out our classroom blog http://wsfirstgraderockstars.blogspot.com/.  I will post updates there along with the weekly newsletters! Feel free to comment under the posts!
-    We started “Name of the Day” today. Each child will have a chance to bring home the share bag (a tote with apples on it). Your child will have a questionnaire to fill out about his/her favorite things. Your child can bring 3 items in the bag that help describe what he/she enjoys. Please return the questionnaire and the bag the very next day!
-    We will start our snack calendar on Tuesday. The snack bag is clear with blue flowers. Please remember we are encouraging healthy snacks. Thanks!

Important Dates:
-   No school 9/5
-   Wednesday, 9/7 will be our PBIS kick-off day! The children will be learning the routines and procedures for positive behavior in all areas of the school. This will be a Day 0 so we will not have our normal MAPLs.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me! Have a wonderful long weekend!
